About Heads Up®
Plant Protectants.
Heads Up® Plant Protectants began on a 600-acre hobby farm in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, founded by pharmacist and farmer Joe Dutcheshen. Inspired by a passion for agriculture and pharmaceutical research, Joe developed a biological formulation from naturally occurring plant-extracted biochemicals.
Over the course of 20 years of dedicated research, this formulation evolved into a leading biological seed treatment that activates systemic acquired resistance in crops, priming them to defend against diseases like white mold and sudden death syndrome. Today, Heads Up® serves farmers across North America, providing innovative, sustainable solutions that enhance crop health and yield.
The Evolution of Heads Up®
1970s
Joe Dutcheshen took over his family's 600-acre farm near Kamsack, Saskatchewan, while also earning his pharmacy degree. His passion for both farming and science laid the foundation for what would become Heads Up®.
1980s
Joe expanded the family farm and continued balancing farming with pharmacy, gaining valuable experience that would shape his approach to agricultural innovation.
1990s
Facing challenging growing seasons and low grain prices, Joe began researching plant-derived biochemicals from specialty crops. In 1999, a successful trial using his proprietary formulation led to the founding of Heads Up® Plant Protectants.
2000s
Research confirmed that Heads Up® worked by activating a plant's natural defense system rather than acting as a fungicide. The product earned EPA registration in 2006 and became one of the first biological seed treatments recognized for its innovative approach to crop protection.
Today
Today, Heads Up® helps protect millions of acres across North America with biological seed treatments trusted by growers. Led by President Colin Dutcheshen, the company continues to invest in research, expand its product offerings, and stay committed to helping farmers protect what they plant.
